Art Statement for “Forest Warning” Series
2018 – 2020

Big trees and large forests have long inspired humans beyond the utilitarian resources they provide. Their spirit is uplifting; some becoming massive, towering and long lived wonders of great strength. They thrive with earth, water and sun, and they benefit man and the environment. Symbolically they join the earth with the sky. Yet now only 25% of the earth’s forests remain, and many are in environmental stress from climate change that brings higher temperatures, drought, disease and forest fires.
In my abstract expressionist painting style, I paint abstractions of dying, burned and fallen trees and the feeling of our present and future loss. The few affected by destructive processes symbolically represent the global advancing crisis for both man and nature.

Dominantly warm sky and forest, charred trees without foliage, and glowing afterburn of limbs that have collapsed into unreal and disintegrating shapes. Altogether, the verticals and diagonals fill the square and create a mosaic of darks and lights.
